I was really influenced by John. He got me playing bass. I have been playing for a year and am trying to follow in his footsteps. Rest in Peace, John

I copied Entwistle bass lines since I was a teenager. I still try to emulate his incredible style. What a terrible loss it is indeed for the music world. I loved you Ox and always will.

Undoubtly the greatest bass-player that has ever graced this earth. John Entwistle revolutionised the bass, in both the way it was played and the way in which people viewed it as an instrument. Being a proud owner of the Who's concert at the 1970 Isle of Wight festival, it is easy to see that he was blessed with musical abilities that aspiring musicians such as myself can only dream of. He will be sorely missed, and the music world simply will not be the same without him.

I stood at the left of the Winterland stage in early 1968, not believing my eyes watching this John Entwistle playing bass... the dive bomb runs of "Heaven and Hell"... thunder and lightning becoming visceral. I felt like a puppy following a brass band and I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. John Entwistle only got better and better... rolled with the punches, descended from the almighty arena stage to play small venues. That kid with the bass, that remarkable macabre boy always just beneath the surface. I heard the news that day that you had died... that great heart stopped, those light-speed thunderfingers stilled. The drama of your death could have been a song you wrote; black humour become ultraviolet. Until I can run out into the next winter thunderstorm, with the wind howling and the rain lashing and the thunder become visceral, I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Maybe both. Did you ever really know just how many of us you touched, and just how irreplaceable you will be? You were a humble hero, but you were in the right place at exactly the right time.

Godspeed, John.

My message in memory of John would be to take heed of his lifestyle and get off of drugs ASAP. The world lost a great musician because of drugs. Drug abuse is very preventable...DON'T EVER START! Look at what happens to even the best of people because of drugs. Think of what he could have offered in the future. He was way too young and talented to die this way.

I never felt that John got the credit he deserved. He had some of the most incredible chops around, and was an incredibly clean player in an era where most of the musicians were fairly sloppy. He should be required listening for any student of rhythm.

God Bless, John. Go in peace.

Music has lost another great one. Being a 40 year old working bass player/singer/songwriter, John & The Who were not only one of my favorites, but a major influence on my playing & songwriting. John proved the bass player did not have to be a "back up musician" without yelling, jumping or destroying his equipment. ( we like that too). John was a superior musician & that was not only his trademark, but his showmanship as well. He will be missed greatly by not only myself, but John & The Who's fans everywhere. My sympathy to his family, friends, Pete, and Roger. He will live on in our music......always. And to you, John.... I thank you. You are not here anymore, but I know you are there, and there is music there....... Carry on. Vince Rule, Grass Valley, California. God Bless You.

John was the best. The Who were the best. The Beatles? great song writers. The Rolling Stones? Not even in the same league. The Who played R+R like it was meant to be played. Out of control and rebelious. If I wanted tame and formulated I'd like Eric Clapton. Thank you John!

I been watching the NewYork concert on TV and was noticing how fast that guys fingers moved on that bass. It was cool, and he had some really creative lines that almost were more than just a bass backing up the song, but it was so melodic, his bass lines stood out from Who songs, and they were catchy as hell. One hell of a musician. Looked forward to seeing him on tour...peace John, rest in peace. Pat---Sacramento, CA

I feel as though I've lost a member of my own family. I loved the Who since childhood and always admired John's talent and quiet yet strong demeanor. I had the opportunity to meet John a couple of years ago and he was a wonderful, warm person. Just a "regular guy". He told me that he loved playing small venues with the John Entwistle Band because he could meet and talk to his fans. Something he never could do as part of the Who. He let me touch his hands....I was mesmerized by the size and strength...exactlly what you would expect when hearing him play. He was larger than life and possessed awesome talent and yet he chatted about his mom and his son as though we were regular acquaintances. He was not nearly as impressed with himself as others were. The world has lost a wonderful man and a tremendous talent. I'll miss him. S NJ

I saw John at the Cabo Wabo in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. He was there jamming with Sammy Hagar for his yearly Oct. 13th bday bash. He fuckin rocked. I met him too, and he was a super nice guy. He didn't act any differently than the common man. I will miss you. Rock on above, as Sammy would say, "Where Eagles Fly". BogusOtis

Many years ago I used to walk to Southfields Junior School in Acton. Most days I would see a van with the name "The Detours" painted on the side with what looked like white wash. I remember a ban the bomb symbol too. Some evenings after school my friend Dave Taylor and I would kick a football around on Fielding Road. A couple of times some big kids asked us to help move some stuff into that van, I think it was a Dormobile. Dave told me the short bloke was a real "hard nut" since I was very young that scared me. The reason I am writing this is I read "The Who" is coming to Hershey Pa where I now live. Small world ! From Acton to Hershey! I wonder if the short bloke is still a "hard nut"? Dear John Entwistle, besides inspiring me to play bass even when i wanted to be a guitar player, your playing has made me a advocate to telling everyone I know that you are indeed one of the greatest if not the greatest bass players in rock history. I wrote a poem called "Rock and Roll Puerto Rican" where I include the Who and also single you out in a certain line. I hope all is well and thank you for inspiring me to play bass

John -

FYI, I caught your July 3 show at Summerfest in Milwaukee as part of the Ringo Starr tribute show to Rock and Roll (with yourself, Todd Rundgren, et al). I'm a musician myself and my band had played there earlier in the day. We finished just in time for me to pack up my gear and hustle over to see you so it worked out perfect.

Your show was great ! I'm 43 and grew up on The Who's music. One musician to another, I've always thought you were the unsung hero of that group. Hope you keep making music for a long time to come. Thank you for all you and The Who have done for Rock and Roll !

John, I know you are coming to Chicago. I need to meet you!! You and your band have inspired my thoughts and beliefs for a long time. However, I have realized that we live in such a capital motivated society, that thoughts and belief don't count anymore. Please tell me that I am wrong. Love ya, and the Band.

Please contact me when you get in town. Your band is so important to me that you have no idea. You have given me the strength to fight in my beliefs regardless of a strong government fighting back, don't let me down. Love ya,

Pat
